COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys (and Girls) Clubs shifted to new sites and boosted teen programs in Toledo to offer more opportunities for youth. The update was announced on Apr. 22.  WTVG
  • Toledo has launched its largest veterans mural project to honor service members from every conflict + the Glass City Veterans Bridge is set to be the first of more than a dozen mural locations planned around town.  WTOL
  • Operation Outfit, a local nonprofit that outfits veterans in nursing homes with new clothing and shoes, was honored with the DAR Community Service Award when founder Nikki Hernandez and her daughter received the award from the Fort Industry Chapter (DAR).   • Toledo Jeep Fest and America250 campaign hosted a presentation on April 22 at UToledo exploring the roles of local engineers, factory workers, soldiers and families in building Jeep production in the city (the program celebrated Toledo’s automotive legacy).  The University of Toledo

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Lucas County Land Bank reported more than $1 billion in economic impact over the past 15 years at the statewide Land Banking Conference in Toledo. A report from BGSU’s Center for Regional Development noted over 900 property renovations and 4,500 demolitions (a $7 return for every $1 invested).  WTVG

  • Parents and students rallied at Harvard Elementary today to oppose potential closures by TPS — a strong community effort sparked by memories of the school's intimate learning environment, according to Minerva Gale.  The Blade

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Sisters of Notre Dame installed a new solar array at their Whitehouse facility that now powers over half its electricity and frees up funds for their mission of caring for creation. This update highlights their commitment to renewable energy and sustainable practices.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Perrysburg have raised concerns over noise and traffic as ODOT outlines the upcoming I-475 project, and local resident Steve Markovic—who has lived in the area for 17 years—said he is considering a move.  The Blade

HEALTH NEWS

  • Police will collect expired and unused pills (as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day) on Saturday at designated drop-off sites countywide.  The Blade
  • Protect Ohio, a program from Ohio State University backed by Governor Mike DeWine, will host town halls in April and May to help rural clinics manage the growing workload amid a serious veterinarian shortage affecting pet and livestock care.  WTVG
  • Aging Untold Extra, sponsored by the Area Office on Aging, will address drug abuse among seniors plus offer guidance on safely discarding medications and discuss caregiver challenges during its episode airing tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with insights from local experts and the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office.  WTVG
