- ➤ Maumee and the Andersons teamed up to create a mini forest for the city—volunteers planted over 300 trees on Earth Day, and the project is expected to take two to three years to complete. WTOL
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Three Springfield High School teens charged in the fatal dragging of Joaquin Simmons faced Judge Amy Stoner Tuesday as the judge ordered they remain locked up and prosecutors said they will be certified as adults—while Simmons' family protested outside—. WTVG
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Tattoo Fest Toledo returns to the Glass City Center from May 16 through May 18—opening on May 16 at 12 p.m., May 17 at 11 a.m., and May 18 at 11 a.m.—and will host over 175 tattoo artists, live competitions including a Worst Tattoo Competition on May 17, and walk-up tattoo sessions; the festival is family friendly and requires attendees to be 18 or older with valid ID. - ➤ The Board of Lucas County Commissioners approved a local vendor preference policy on Tuesday that will guide county agencies to favor businesses operating for at least three years within 50 miles if their quotes are within two percent of the lowest bid—federal or state funding rules may limit its use. - ➤ The Blade will host a Job and Education Fair on April 30 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Delta Hotels Toledo on Glendale Ave — the event will let employers and job seekers meet for on-the-spot interviews and explore new career and education opportunities. WTVG
- ➤ Kyle Hollar will earn his master’s degree in nursing on May 2 and will continue as a registered nurse at UTMC after beginning as a medical assistant three years ago (through UToledo’s Graduate-Entry Program). He said his training and experience have prepared him to serve patients every day. The University of Toledo
- ➤ Today, the University of Toledo suspended nine undergraduate programs to meet Senate Bill 1 enrollment rules — while students and faculty say the cuts unfairly affect subjects tied to diversity, equity and inclusion. Students already enrolled will be allowed to finish their degrees and courses in these subjects will continue as minor offerings. WTVG
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Work continues on a new materials recovery facility in Lucas County that will keep recyclable sorting local when finished. Currently, recyclables are taken 90 miles to Oberlin for processing. WTOL
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Access Ohio 2050 will host 12 public open houses across Ohio to discuss plans, policies and investments for the next 25 years. In Toledo, one open house will be held on May 6 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments (300 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive) to collect public feedback on improving the transportation system. - ➤ The Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Committee will host a public meeting today at 4 p.m. at Toledo City Council Chambers at One Government Center. City leaders will present quarterly updates on public safety and announce grant awards from the Ohio Opioid Settlement to support recovery and prevention efforts. WTVG
