COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Getting to 1 Diaper Bank — located at the Salvation Army in downtown Toledo — provides free diapers for 700-800 families each month. Donations remain needed to meet demand and reduce health risks for babies.  WTVG
  • Springfield Township will host its Summer Series starting June 27 at 9 a.m. featuring the Firecracker 5K, HEROhustle, live music, and fireworks to raise funds for charities including veteran organizations.   • Toledo’s Old West End Festival will run from June 6-7 with the King Wamba Carnival Parade starting at 10 a.m. Saturday (joined by house tours, an art fair, and a Friday night bike roll), showcasing rich neighborhood history and community spirit.  WTOL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gasoline prices in Toledo dropped by about 24 cents to $3.60 on Sunday — a decline of over 6% from last week and 12.2 cents lower than a month ago. GasBuddy analysts warn that prices may rise again soon if global oil market risks continue.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Toledo police are inviting pre-kindergarteners to learn safety skills during a free summer program (Safe-T-City) held in June and July at Scott Park Shelter House. The program will offer hands-on lessons to help young learners stay safe in their community.  WTOL
  • Families have rallied and submitted petitions (urging the district to reconsider plans to close Harvard and Navarre elementary schools) to protect local education. Community members say these efforts aim to ensure that decisions about local schools are carefully reviewed.  WTOL

  • Advanced Specialty Hospitals of Toledo will close its long-term care facility on Garden Lake Parkway on May 1, and 116 employees will be terminated on June 8, state filings show. The hospital provided 40 private rooms for patients recovering from critical illnesses.  WTVG
  • Dr. David Kennedy and Dr. Steven Haller are leading the ongoing Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research study to examine how toxic Lake Erie algae might enter residents' bodies through the air.
