COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity held its first build of 2026 Friday and launched a new partnership with Toledo Public Schools Career Technologies. Volunteers and students helped build a home for local mother Jawanna Smith Riccardi, which is expected to be completed mid- to late summer.  WTVG
  • Residents can adopt healthy, vaccinated pets at the Toledo Humane Society in Maumee, where staff guide visitors through a simple process. The shelter also hosts monthly volunteer orientations (including a reduced fee for juniors) and maintains a dedicated cruelty department to protect animals.  Toledo City Paper
  • Family and friends gathered in Ottawa to honor Vietnam veteran Eugene Schram on his 100th birthday, celebrating a lifetime of service. The centennial event recognized his lasting contributions to the community.  WTOL

  • Several UToledo film students had their films screened at the Ann Arbor Film Festival on March 25 and 26 at the Michigan Theater (including works by London Toney, Naya Jones, Juan Drown, Liz Paulson and Caleb Thompson).   • University of Iowa Press will release Carryout, Hasan Dudar’s debut collection of linked short stories about a Lebanese-Arab American family in Toledo, on (May 5). EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mercy Health and Toledo Public Schools have launched a pharmacy technician program for high schoolers to earn trainee licenses while working in local hospital pharmacies. The program will expand to 24 students next year to help meet local healthcare needs — easing worries about future staffing shortages.  WTOL
  • Toledo Police Department is accepting applications for its (47th annual) Safe-T-City summer program that teaches kindergarteners safety skills; sessions run from June 9 through July 29 with morning and afternoon options on a first-come basis.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Black Swamp Bird Observatory is hosting free bird-watching events as part of the Biggest Week in American Birding festival held each May at Maumee Bay State Park and nearby parks. The event invites beginners and seasoned birders to see the spring migration up close.  Toledo City Paper

  • Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green is hosting Ladies’ Night Out to celebrate 75 years of women’s health. The event will offer education, stress relief and early detection services for common health concerns.  The Blade

  • On Thursday night, Toledo Walleye beat Fort Wayne 4-1 to keep their division title hopes alive. The win boosted their season as they remain in contention for postseason play.  The Blade
