COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers in Toledo are training as chaplains at Lucas County Jail this month to help inmates find comfort in faith. Pastor Jerome Bush leads the 35-person program while former inmates and long-serving chaplains share their stories of change.  WTVG
  • The American Red Cross will install free smoke alarms in Toledo on May 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—the effort will help local families vulnerable to house fires under its national Home Fire Campaign.  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gross Electric celebrated 115 years of serving Toledo by unveiling its new 'Experience Room' on Wednesday, April 16th—highlighting its ongoing commitment to modern lighting and electrical solutions since 1910.  WTOL

CRIME NEWS

  • Hershel Winbush (68) was sentenced on April 17 for robbing several Toledo banks from 2019 through 2024 by threatening employees with notes claiming he had a gun, and he received over 11 years in prison, will pay $8,210 in restitution, and later serve two years probation.  WTVG
  • Thomas Ostrosky, director of the now-defunct Lazarus Experience ministry in Toledo, was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury on felony theft and telecom fraud charges after allegedly stealing over $150,000 from donors including older adults—he was arrested in Florida on Wednesday and now awaits extradition to Ohio.  WTOL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Toledo has announced that its Clean Toledo program for 2025 will offer 10 free drop-off events for recyclables and bulky items from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—it will also include Block-by-Block curbside pickups, free residential food composting at three metroparks, boat shrink wrap recycling on select dates, and free disposal days at Hoffman Road Landfill with specific guidelines to follow.  WTOL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced that Summit Street construction will finish a month earlier than expected, meaning work will be completed sooner than originally planned.  WTOL

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eleven players from the 1974-75 Goaldiggers returned downtown on April 13 for a meet-and-greet at Imagination Station to mark the 50-year anniversary of the Miracle on Main Street and sign autographs for fans. Attendees took photos with the Turner Cup—on loan from the Hockey Hall of Fame—while remembering the hard-fought season led by coach Ted Garvin.  Toledo Free Press
