BUSINESS NEWS

  • Meta is building an $800 million data center in Wood County that will use AI to link Facebook and Instagram users. Construction began last October on a 280-acre site in Middleton Township (on State Route 582) and the facility is expected to be fully operational in 2027 with 1,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent positions.  Toledo Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Culture Clash Records will host Record Store Day 2025 on April 12 as an all-day event in its new downtown space with live music starting at 10 a.m. The owners adjusted rules to allow entry of 10 customers at a time and bring back local concerts and vinyl sales—featuring jazz, singer/songwriter acts, DJ sets, hip-hop and more.  Toledo Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Drivers in Toledo have seen gas prices drop by roughly 50 cents per gallon after a 90-day tariff pause began on April 9. Petroleum experts warn that the dip may be short-lived—ongoing trade tensions and a weakening economy could drive prices lower.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kimberlie Kowalka Todd, a former office manager now pursuing her Ph.D. in foundations of education at the University of Toledo, is studying social justice while working as a visual art specialist and literacy tutor with Literacy Everywhere! to support early learning for families facing housing instability. She will present her research at a Denver seminar this month—an effort that could guide future national educational reforms.  The University of Toledo
  • UToledo’s RockeTHON will take place April 12th at the Health Education Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will raise funds for Nationwide Children’s Hospital to pay for equipment + support facility upkeep, building on last year’s $14,000 effort.  The University of Toledo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two siblings were honored after they helped save their family from a house fire—Toledo Fire Rescue presented them with proclamations and a special ride in a fire truck on Thursday. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz recognized their bravery during the ceremony at One Government Center.  WTVG
  • Toledo officials continue expanding the Vision Zero project to reduce traffic deaths and injuries while residents express mixed views on changes like the removal of Whitechapel chicanes and permanent narrowing on Middlesex. The city will convert Erie Street in North Toledo into a two-way street—residents expect the change to slow speeding and reduce wrong-way driving.  WTOL
  • Ohio made sextortion a felony on Wednesday when Braden’s Law took effect. The law is named after 15-year-old Braden Markus, who was a victim of a sextortion scam that led to his suicide in October 2021— it also requires companies to give parents digital access to their deceased children’s records within 30 days.  WTOL
