ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Marine veteran Horace Oates Jr. died pulling his family from a burning home on Evansdale Tuesday morning, and a family friend now accused of starting the fire was seen nearby as firefighters worked to control the blaze.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • An art exhibit opens this weekend in downtown Toledo, featuring works by Lucas County Juvenile Court teens (highlighting local creativity). Residents are invited to see the fresh talent on display.  WTVG
  • Toledo author Micheline Brewer self-published her debut novel, Life Is Terminal And So Is This Cold Sore, with Book Baby and had copies available by September 2025 with a November release at Barnes and Noble and Amazon. The book blends prose, poetry and vignettes to explore life (local inspiration).  Toledo Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • KeyBank invested $225K in the Historic South Initiative's exterior home repair and roofing program to help preserve historic homes in Toledo. The contribution supports local efforts to improve housing exteriors.  WTOL

  • UToledo-led Great Lakes Partnership to Enhance the Nuclear Workforce received a $49M award April 9 to modernize nuclear safety training + attract new talent + establish recognized reactor safety certifications.  The University of Toledo
  • Toledo Tomorrow is hosting a free in-person event that gives students and families walk-in help with college applications, FAFSA completion, and scholarship guidance. The nonprofit partners with local schools to boost higher education access in the area.  WTOL
  • Dr. John M. Laux has been named interim dean at the College of Health and Human Services at The University of Toledo + he will begin his role on June 1 as the university starts a national search for a permanent leader.  The University of Toledo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Toledo Public Schools board announced Thursday that CFO/Treasurer Ryan Stechschulte submitted his resignation after 11 years of service and will remain until July 1. The district is accepting applications for his replacement today (via the Ohio School Board Association).  WTVG
  • Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority will run the $3 Walleye Shuttle for every postseason home game at Huntington Center starting April 23. The service departs 60 minutes before puck drop from five park-and-ride stops including a pick-up at the Waterville Kroger.  WTVG

  • Toledo’s first Pickleball Classic will unite competition with career networking; organizers said participants can win prizes and explore professional opportunities.  WTOL
  • Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority will expand its round-trip shuttle service for Toledo Walleye home playoff games for $3, offering rides between the Huntington Center and park-and-ride spots in Sylvania, Waterville, west Toledo, Maumee and Oregon starting Thursday, Apr. 23. Shuttles depart 20 minutes after each game.  WTOL
