COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bob & Tom Show will broadcast from the Glass City Center Ballroom in Toledo on Friday to celebrate the Toledo Mud Hens' opening day — admission is free for all and comedian Heywood Banks, known for his 'YEAH, TOAST!' song, will join the hosts. After the broadcast the crew will sign special posters at Fricker’s.  WTOL
  • Justin Scott Slater—one of 17 Carnegie Hero recipients—rescued a woman from the Maumee River on July 31; he jumped in from a dock while fishing with his father after she called for help and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and the Heimlich maneuver until first responders arrived.  WTOL
  • TARTA and ATU Local 697 approved a new 2 1/2-year contract that gives transit workers an 11.5% raise and will start an operator training program on May 1—this deal meets industry standards—and Toledo Symphony named music teacher Matthew Shirey the winner of the Outstanding Music Educator Award. The Old West End Association and Lucas County Land Bank plan to fix up a long-abandoned church into homes and shops while Toledo Public Schools and the University of Cincinnati will offer a six-week paid internship in a new Biology Meets Engineering program.  Toledo Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, the Toledo Public Schools Board voted to close Edgewater Elementary — the building is set to be repurposed for other district uses. Edgewater students will be transferred to Ottawa River Elementary in the fall.  WTVG

  • A study from UToledo Health found a sharp rise in POTS diagnoses after COVID-19 began—Dr. Blair Grubb said his team is examining the trend further.  The University of Toledo
