COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The John Henry Eldred Junior Foundation, a Toledo-based nonprofit, partnered on the Old South End project to support local organizations with housing stability, youth education, food security and rural library funding. It awarded $8 million since 2023 (including a pilot with housing providers) to help build stronger foundations.  WTVG
  • Juice House will host the inaugural 2026 Toledo Pickleball Classic and Career Futures Expo Saturday, April 11 at UToledo from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free event will feature a pickleball tournament, kids clinic, and career expo (noon to 3 p.m.) with 80+ regional employers and nonprofits.  The University of Toledo

CULTURE NEWS

  • Luxe Prive Restaurant & Lounge has opened at 1919 Monroe St near the Toledo Museum of Art, offering brunch, dinner, and signature drinks in an upscale setting. Chef Malee Brown and bartender Lexis Woods serve dishes like truffle fries and Privé Punch — adding diversity to local dining.  WTVG
  • Toledo Repertoire Theatre's building for costumes and props was damaged by a windstorm. Volunteers are needed today from 2-6 p.m. to assist with the cleanup.  WTOL

  • General Motors plans to invest millions in Toledo Propulsion Systems after local officials announced the investment yesterday.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its March meeting today the UToledo Board of Trustees honored three faculty members, Dr. Rupali Chandar, Dr. Peter Andreana and Dr. Stanislaw Stepkowski, as Distinguished University Professors and named Dr. Kristen Geaman as Distinguished University Lecturer for achievements in teaching, research and service.  The University of Toledo
  • Yesterday, residents in north central Ohio saw and heard a bright meteor, and UToledo planetarium director Dr. Michael Cushing explained that such events are rare. He added that the phenomenon offers valuable insight for astronomers.  The University of Toledo
  • Yesterday, UToledo Trustees approved a master’s in data science, a bachelor’s in constitutional studies, and two accelerated degrees – along with minor room and board rate increases for fall. They also renamed the welcome center for the Saloff sisters, with construction to finish this summer.  The University of Toledo
  • Students at UToledo's Stranahan Arboretum are tapping trees to harvest sap for maple syrup in a course (Science and Policy of Foraging) that teaches tree biology and environmental care; the syrup is given away to support a free summer science camp for kids.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Metroparks Toledo are removing infected oak trees to slow oak wilt, a fungal disease that kills black oaks fast and threatens white oaks, and use a vibratory plow (to sever infected roots). Property owners should avoid pruning from April through August and contact an arborist if trees show early browning.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lucas County economic development director Matt Heyrman resigned Wednesday to join the Greater Toledo Community Foundation as its chief impact officer; his final day is April 10 and resignation takes effect May 2. County commissioners said an interim director will be chosen internally to lead economic development.  WTOL
  • Maumee will soon install new water meters as part of its city replacement project, with officials expected to share the installation timetable. Residents should watch for updates on service improvements.  WTVG

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Victory Center delivered its 3,000th wig Wednesday to a cancer patient starting a new journey. The center offers no-cost wigs and cancer support services to those in need.  WTOL
