  • UToledo Camp Kesem will host its Make the Magic Gala to fund its summer camp for kids with caregivers who had cancer. The event will run from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, at Sylvania Country Club & tickets are available through Wednesday, March 4.  The University of Toledo

  • Country star Darius Rucker will perform on June 4 at the Toledo Zoo Amphitheater and tickets go on sale Friday, Mar. 6 via DariusRucker.com. The rock band Foreigner is set to play on Aug. 18 and ticket sales begin Friday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. at foreigneronline.com.  WTVG

  • Lake Local had a late start Tuesday after law enforcement reported an online gaming threat, plus extra security was on site to safeguard students.  WTVG
  • Toledo Public Schools board approved a 4-year budget forecast Tuesday night that projected a $68-million deficit caused by reduced funding, excess labor costs and declining enrollment.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Northwest Ohio has endured a six-month drought despite recording over 28 inches of snowfall; officials note that western counties require 10 inches and eastern areas 5 inches of rain to break the drought. The Climate Prediction Center forecasts slightly above-average rainfall over the next three months & experts remain cautious.  WTOL
  • Electricity rates rose last year so many local households face higher heating bills as winter continues; Sashem Brey offers weekend fixes and long-term upgrades (tips to lower energy costs) for families.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Representative Michele Grim announced nearly $15M in funding to support affordable housing initiatives. The Controlling Board approved $10M for housing development assistance, $4.5M for housing grants, and $250K for a resident services program.  WTVG
  • Erin Thompson from the Social Security Administration explains that the Social Security Fairness Act will change retirement benefits for thousands in northwest Ohio. The policy reform is expected to reshape local savings and income planning soon.  WTOL
  • On Tuesday, 33 people from 16 countries including Russian couple Aydar and Prabani Atnagulov were naturalized as U.S. citizens at the Toledo Club in a ceremony celebrating their new status.  WTOL

  • The Toledo Heart Walk, hosted at Promenade Park by the American Heart Association, will promote cardiovascular health and CPR education on May 17. The event starts at 8 a.m. with 1- and 3-mile walks and aims to help meet a $350,000 fundraising goal (registration is online).  WTOL
  • UToledo will inaugurate the Northwest Ohio Cancer Research Institute on Tuesday, March 3 at 4 p.m. in Room 110 of the Health Education Building, marking a new program that fosters collaborative cancer research among 60+ experts.  The University of Toledo
