COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Waite High School graduate Daron Webb received a new car on Thursday at Industrial Power Systems in Rossford after overcoming homelessness, depression and caring for his younger brother while working for a local electrical company; community partners including Yark Automotive Group and State Farm helped support him.  WTVG

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An 8-inch valve burst Wednesday afternoon in Old West End, spilling 7 million gallons of water, which is about the volume of 10 Olympic-sized pools, into local streets as city crews responded quickly and began repairing the aging main.  WTOL
  • A massive water main break Wednesday night left water gushing onto roads in the Old West End — crews are now checking road conditions and advising caution.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lisa Sung (award-winning jazz pianist) will perform at UToledo’s Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 for the annual Art Tatum Memorial Concert.  The University of Toledo

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sister Nancy Leinenkugel serves as the final president at Lourdes University as it will close due to financial challenges. The decision follows a review of all available options and marks the institution's end of operations.  WTOL
  • Toledo Public Schools held a community meeting at Bowsher High School to review proposals addressing a $68 million deficit and possible changes in transportation, athletics, building use and schedules (with some students voicing concerns and community members sharing supportive views).   • UToledo’s Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership hosted Dr. Diana Schaub (professor emerita from Loyola University Maryland) for a free public lecture on Frederick Douglass on Tuesday, Feb. 10.  The University of Toledo

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Erie is 95% ice-covered as warm weather and winds create an 80-mile crack that makes winter ice conditions risky. The Coast Guard + local teams with sherp and air boats are ready to rescue anyone on weak ice.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio's Attorney General announced a new initiative to address elder abuse after reports increased by (400%) over the past seven years, with the program aiming to protect vulnerable seniors. The state will roll out the effort in the coming months.  WTVG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Will Horton (a local veteran) has been on dialysis since his 2020 kidney failure diagnosis and is actively seeking a matching donor to improve his health.  WTVG
  • The Go Red for Women luncheon on Thursday turned heart health awareness into action by celebrating survivors and the strength behind their stories. The local event emphasized heart health as a key community issue.  WTOL

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Toledo is launching Rocket Youth Sports Leagues to boost local youth sports, starting this spring with boys and girls flag football at Toledo Athletics + additional sports and clinics will be added later. Ed Price is named executive director to guide the new initiative.  WTOL
