COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wayman D. Palmer YMCA — recipient of the 2025 Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award — was honored in Washington over the weekend.  WTOL
  • United Way of Greater Toledo began 211 Week on Monday; a breakfast fundraiser is planned for Wednesday and a training session will be held on Friday (exact timing and location remain to be announced).  The Blade
  • Residents at Madonna Homes on Huron Street have gone four days without access to laundry facilities because the heating system also fails to provide hot water. Affected tenants, including those with mobility challenges, want a full system overhaul to fix the ongoing issues.  WTVG
  • Earl Mack has dedicated his adult life to serving Toledo as a combat medic, law enforcement officer and president of the Toledo Buffalo Soldiers (a leader committed to community support).  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Northwest Ohio shone at Westminster when Natasha Huling brought her American Staffordshire terrier+Bosa to compete in the local dog show, drawing support from pet lovers. The event celebrated regional canine talent and community spirit in a proud display.  WTOL

  • 13 Action News anchor James Starks introduced rising star Pay’Yon Parker as she nears completion of her studies at Toledo Pre-Med on Monday, Feb. 9. Parker’s early interest in medicine and steady confidence set her apart in her promising path.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UT researcher William Hintz warned that road salt runoff is raising chloride levels in the Maumee River and Lake Erie, harming aquatic life and risking wells. The state is offering up to $75,000 grants for deicing equipment that can cut salt use by nearly 80% + officials expect cleaner water.  WTOL
  • Environmental officials from the U.S. and Canada met on Feb. 9 to discuss Great Lakes progress and plan future priorities. Dr. Christine Mayer noted that managing invasive grass carp is key to protecting wetlands near Lake Erie.  The University of Toledo

  • Mercy Health is set to host its sixth annual Love Your Baby Health & Wellness Event on Feb. 13 from 1-4 p.m. at Seaway Marketplace on 1707 Cherry St. The event will provide pregnant and new moms with screenings, support + resources from local organizations.  WTVG

  • Toledo Rotary Club speaker Jonelle Massey said young athletes face pressure at home, on the field — and online, and they need spotters who act as mentors rather than just catching weights. Her remarks call for a supportive network to guide youth in sports.  The Blade
  • Mike Vrabel, a Walsh Jesuit native, will coach the Patriots in Super Bowl LX on Sunday as he pursues making history as the first person to win as both player and coach with the same team. The local community celebrates his roots (his jersey was retired in 2024).  Spectrum News 1
