COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wood County Committee on Aging provides essential services to help older-adults stay independent during cold weather. It continues to support local seniors with ongoing resources to meet daily needs.  WTOL
  • The Sisters of St. Francis and Lourdes University will launch the 15th annual Have a Heart Restock Drive from Feb. 9 to 13 to collect personal care items for local pantries (drop-off boxes are at car dealerships along Central Avenue and Monroe Street) with items sorted Monday, Feb. 16.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Toledo's Whiskey Bean Boutique features 63 local makers and offers unique art, free craft nights, and hands-on classes. The boutique is open (Tuesday-Saturday) for creative enthusiasts looking to explore local talent.  WTVG
  • Toledo Opera is set to host a cocktail evening to promote Gaetano Donizetti’s L’Elisir D’Amore, an opera that mixes love and magic with tongue-in-cheek snake oil remedies. The event will offer guests a chance to sample themed refreshments + hear details about the upcoming production.  The Blade
  • Local high schools and community theatre groups are staging spring musicals with shows like Newsies Jr. and Singin’ in the Rain. Productions began Feb. 6 and continue through April at venues from Ottawa Hills High School Auditorium to Toledo’s Historic Ohio Theatre.  WTOL

  • WGTE Public Media is partnering with local groups to offer media training to at-risk youths impacted by gun violence (project lead Marcus Harrison said the idea was natural). Training sessions will begin soon.  The Blade
  • In November of last year, Ohio allowed high school athletes to receive compensation from Name, Image and Likeness deals, but now House Bill 661 (introduced by Reps. Bird and Odioso) would bar middle and high school athletes from such payments, with a hearing on Wednesday in the House Education Committee.  Spectrum News 1

  • Local lawmakers are proposing new bills to manage rapid data center growth in communities that have imposed temporary bans on new construction (experts predict the industry could rival automotive by 2030).  WTVG

  • Toledo drivers are urged to plan sober rides on Super Bowl Sunday as AAA + MADD warn that nearly 45% of traffic fatalities result from alcohol-impaired driving; designating a sober driver can help avoid high DUI costs and dangerous outcomes.  Spectrum News 1

  • Patrick Henry girls basketball clinched a share of the NWOAL title with a convincing win over Delta on Thursday in Hamler. The team built a strong second-quarter stretch to secure their spot in the league standings.  The Blade
  • Ottawa Hills sophomore Kendell Skiver surpassed 1,000 career points as the host team won 53-34 against Maumee Valley Country Day, marking a big milestone during a home game.  The Blade
  • Ohio's Anthony Thompson of Western Reserve High School and Geneva and Saniyah Hall of Spire Academy have been named to the 49th McDonald’s All-American game and will compete in Phoenix on Mar. 31. Viewers can watch the girls start at 7 p.m. and the boys at 9 p.m. on ESPN.  Spectrum News 1
