COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jack Mayer, the longest-serving Volunteer Trail Patrol member at Swan Creek Metropark, retires after more than 5,000 hours of service and 22 years on the trails. Metroparks Toledo is recruiting new volunteers (neighbors encouraged to join with a partner) to help ensure safety and maintenance.  WTVG
  • More than 500 UToledo student volunteers will serve food pantries, community gardens and other local projects on Saturday, March 21 during The BIG Event. The day of service gives students an opportunity (a hands-on way to help) support local organizations.  The University of Toledo

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Fresenius Medical Care will lay off 54 cross-dock workers at its distribution center on Blue Heron Drive in Oregon on April 10. Affected employees will receive severance + support services as the company shifts part of its logistics work to Ryder.  WTVG
  • One of Each, a locally owned wine concept from John and Lexi Metz, is set to open at Ostrich Towne this spring — offering a rotating menu of 25 curated wines, light snacks and event space for gatherings. The venue meets local demand and adds to the mix of events.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Diocese of Toledo released its 2026 Fish Fry Guide for Lent, listing nearly 40 Friday fish fries with details (dates, times, and locations) across northwest Ohio. The guide supports the local tradition as Lent leads up to Easter starting Feb. 18.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WGTE launched Make It Make Sense, a three year paid internship program preparing vulnerable young adults for media careers; the program partners with Reinvest Toledo & the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement to train participants through town hall events and active production opportunities.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Power Siting Board authorized a natural gas-fired electrical generation facility in Wood County (set to supply an adjacent data center) and officials say project planning will soon begin.  WTOL
  • The Toledo Lucas County Public Library appointed its first all-African American leadership team to the Board of Trustees on Thursday, Jan. 22. Keith B. Jordan Sr., Michael Alexander Sr. and Kendra N. Smith bring nearly 20 years of combined board experience to expand community programming.  WTVG
  • Bayview Retiree Golf Course supporters are urging city officials to let construction materials be stored at the unused Detwiler parking lot (formerly the closed pool) as council members prepare a vote in two weeks on Toledo Edison’s request amid looming lease termination.  WTVG

  • Local chef Ella Dudek, who once weighed 600 pounds, survived a torn aorta after an 8½-hour surgery at Toledo Hospital. She is in cardiac rehab and now inspires others to choose healthier living & shares her journey.  WTOL
  • A new OSU study shows ticks carrying Lyme disease remain active in winter when temperatures stay above freezing. Lucas County has launched a tick program that collects and tests ticks at five sites (Stickney, Wildwood, Oak Openings, Pearson, and Side Cut metroparks) and urges residents to check themselves and pets.  WTVG
  • February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and experts urge parents to watch for warning signs like mood changes and rapid relationship shifts among teens.
