COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Toledo Zoo welcomed Eugene, a 130-pound baby giraffe born Jan. 17, who is 14-year-old Lily’s first calf and father Rocket’s second baby.  WTOL
  • Cold weather is causing hydrants in Toledo to freeze, making it hard for fire crews to get water (water left inside turns to ice). Fire crews are adjusting their methods during winter.  WTOL
  • Grounds for Thought announced on its Facebook page Thursday morning that founder Sandy Wick passed away, and her loss has deeply affected everyone who knew her.  WTOL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Toledo fire crews responded 13 times to stalled elevator calls at downtown LaSalle and Commodore Perry apartments as owners implement a $2M modernization plan and tenants confirm the elevators now work after repeated rescues over two years.  WTOL

  • The Toledo Blade will move its operations from its longtime Superior Street home + it will continue publishing as plans for the new workspace are finalized.  WTVG
  • Ridge & River, a local outdoor gear store, has expanded with a new shop at Levis Commons in Perrysburg while keeping its Adams Street location downtown. The owner highlights a full range of seasonal gear and repair services that support Toledo’s outdoor community.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • TARTA will partner with the Toledo Lucas County Public Library & Toledo NAACP to honor Rosa Parks with read-alongs on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at three branch locations. Preschoolers at Waterville Branch will also tour TARTA’s wrapped Rosa Parks bus.  WTVG
  • Due to bitter cold, the Toledo Zoo has been closed for 13 days while zookeepers care for animals and clear the grounds, and it will reopen Monday for visitors to see winter-adapted exhibits.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Partners including the John Henry Eldred Jr. Foundation & HCNO funded Schools as Community Hubs in high-need Toledo neighborhoods through the end of this school year. The $245,000 grant will keep essential supports like educational aid, housing, food & healthcare available to students, families & community members.  WTVG
  • Toledo Public Schools board approved 32 layoffs effective Feb. 1 to address a $70 million budget shortfall, with cuts affecting nurses, social workers and other roles from TAAP and TFT. Community meetings on the district’s transformational plan begin Feb. 4 at Woodward High School.  WTVG

  • A local family invites Toledo residents to join a bone marrow drive today at Lourdes University's Franciscan Center (5-9 p.m.) that could help find a matching donor for their son battling acute myeloid leukemia while raffle prizes will support treatment costs.  WTVG
