COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Toledo Humane Society cruelty investigators say extreme weather is raising calls about pets left outdoors and urge residents to bring animals indoors + ensure they have adequate shelter, food and water per state law.  WTVG
  • Hollywood Casino and Planned Pethood are teaming up to host a puppy bowl adoption event on Jan. 31 from noon to 2 p.m. at the casino, featuring adoptable dogs (with raffles, a full bar, and vendors) to raise funds and awareness for animals in need.  WTVG
  • Following Sunday's winter storm, video footage from Monday morning shows roadway conditions remain challenging northwest of Toledo — officials are still assessing damage.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sylvania hosts a rock tribute series at Centennial Terrace this summer with Killer Queen on July 11, Hotel California on July 17, Hairball on July 18, and Get the Led Out on August 15 — tickets go on sale Friday, Jan. 30 via Ticketmaster or the Huntington Center box office.  WTOL
  • The Greater Toledo Community Foundation awarded over $500K in grants to 15 arts groups for murals, theater, film, dance & civic projects. The awards boosted local culture and community creativity.  WTOL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy reported that Toledo gas prices averaged $2.83 per gallon on Monday, Jan. 26, up 14.2 cents from last week; prices ranged from $2.15 to $3.09, nearly matching the national average as international tensions and a winter storm reduced supply.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local school districts are planning makeup days to cover lost instruction hours from calamity day closures due to winter weather. The Patrick Henry district reached seven closures already — other districts like Eastwood and Otsego are considering virtual learning days and extra days in May to meet requirements.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio residents are urged to search for unclaimed funds on the state's website and submit complete documents promptly to recover money from old bank accounts, uncashed checks, or insurance proceeds. Incomplete or duplicate claims may delay payment while there is no fee to claim these funds.  Spectrum News 1
  • Ohio EPA Director John Logue said last Friday he was not fully committed to a general wastewater-discharge permit meant to speed up a planned data center construction near downtown. Officials noted that further review will occur before a final decision is reached.  The Blade
  • TARTA has debuted Route 18 (linking downtown with Meijer on Alexis Road) and changed several routes to run every 30 minutes instead of hourly as part of its new winter schedule.  WTOL

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Heart Association offers shoveling safety tips to help Toledo residents lower heart risks by recommending a steady pace (with frequent breaks) during snow removal.  WTOL
  • A north Toledo family is investigating lead contamination on the siding of their 2009-built home after their toddler tested positive, while tests inside were normal; the family will get tested and contact the EPA + neighbors to pinpoint the source.  WTVG
