COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Students, alumni, and staff at Lourdes University in Sylvania are preparing 180 casseroles (the 10th annual Fill the Freezer event) to support the Toledo Labre Project. The 24-hour marathon began at 3 p.m. Friday and will end at 3 p.m. today.  WTVG
  • Emergency warming centers open in Toledo this weekend and on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The overnight center at St. Paul’s Methodist Church runs from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday through Monday while daytime support is available at St. Paul’s Community Center and Cherry Street Mission, which operates 24 hours.  WTOL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Pale Horse opened yesterday at 6 p.m. at 319 N. Superior St. in downtown Toledo and features local artwork with a menu of small plates + cocktails. It now operates daily until 2 a.m. as a new spot for horror-themed dining.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ottawa Park’s outdoor ice rink is hosting a Caribbean Island themed skate night (with free leis and complimentary fruit bowls for skaters) today. The event brings a festive twist to winter skating.  WTOL
  • Acoustics for Autism returns on March 1 as an outdoor musical festival that raises funds + helping families access autism support not covered by insurance + in a community event designed to offer local care options.  WTOL
  • A new documentary featuring the groundbreaking Toledo Troopers is gaining national attention. The film explores the team's legacy (a key local milestone) and highlights their role in shaping community sports.  WTOL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New Horizons Baking Company on New York Avenue will close its plant on Mar. 17, triggering layoffs for 68 employees — the WARN notice said the move supports a long-term consolidation plan.  WTVG
  • Allegiant Airlines’ new nonstop flight from Toledo to Sarasota and Bradenton boasted a 93% load factor in December after launching in November, and Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority anticipates more flights and economic benefits as travel picks up.  Toledo Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City, county and state officials are using H2Ohio grants to tackle concerns over excessive road salting and its impact on local water quality. Ecology professor Dr. William Hintz explained (hinting at environmental risks) that the funding supports measures to reduce harmful salt overuse.  The University of Toledo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WBGU-TV announced that it will stop airing PBS programming after June 30 because federal cuts removed $1.1M in annual funding; the station will switch to broadcasting the Ohio Channel while BGSU shifts to livestreaming and new student opportunities.  WTVG

SPORTS NEWS

  • The former Toledo Mobsters hockey team is under new ownership and will undergo a complete rebrand with a new name and logo after suspending operations on Monday because of roster issues. New owners said on Friday they plan to build on the club’s legacy and usher in a fresh era.  WTOL
