COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents and nonprofits in Old South End are testing a receivership process to repair over 70 abandoned properties. The group will start with one house on Colburn Street+ and if the pilot succeeds, extend the approach to other blighted homes to combat years of disinvestment.  WTVG
  • Local organizers of Sock it to the Homeless will distribute winter gear and record-breaking 2,200 new socks, hats, and gloves at the 419Cares food kitchen on Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. on 18th St & Madison Ave, following a drive that collected donations from local businesses since November.  WTVG
  • Heat was restored for an 86-year-old Toledo resident after he used space heaters + an oven to warm his home, a dangerous practice that put him at risk. The incident happened on Jan. 8 before proper heating was reestablished.  WTVG
  • The Victory Center will host its 19th annual luncheon and fashion show (Courageous in Coral) on Friday, Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Perrysburg, with WTOL anchors Dan Cummins and Kalie Marantette returning to support free cancer services.  WTOL
  • Heat was restored for an 86-year-old Toledo man who had been using space heaters and an oven to warm his home; local officials confirmed today that the service was quickly re-established.  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Yarder Manufacturing is constructing a new 100,000 sqft facility (in Legacy Business Park) in the Monclova-Maumee-Toledo Joint Economic Development Zone, with equipment transfer planned to begin in June. The project is supported by funding from Monclova Township, Lucas County, and the state and will create room for future expansion.  Toledo Free Press

  • Local mural artist Dean Davis presents his 'Kindred Spirit' exhibition at the Portal at Toledo School for the Arts, running through January — offering a unique display of creative work.  WTOL

  • Twenty-three student-athletes from the Toledo football program were named to the 2025 Academic All-MAC Team, breaking the record of 22 from 2021. Eight players also earned CSC Academic All-District honors, marking a new program record.  The University of Toledo

  • Cuyahoga County reported three measles cases in unvaccinated children, and Lucas County health officials advise vaccination & urge residents to review their immunization records to prevent further spread.  WTOL
