COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Toledo Women’s Basketball will host the ‘Justice for Sierah’ game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Savage Arena as they play Western Michigan. Ticket sales (with $5 per ticket donated to the charity) and a jersey auction plus KidPrint ID sign-ups will support the cause.  WTVG
  • Fremont Federal Credit Union plans to donate $80,000 to local charities in celebration of its 80th anniversary. The donation is expected to boost community programs & strengthen local ties.  The Blade
  • Toledo’s local partners will host the MLK Experience and Unity Day Celebration on Monday, Jan. 19 (10:00 a.m.) via local websites and at downtown venues. The event, themed Our Story, Our Strength, features reflections, artistic performances and a tour of the African American Legacy Project with additional activities through Jan. 24.  WTVG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ice and strong winds delayed a vital Lake Erie steel cargo shipment, causing ripple effects for local steelmakers in Ohio + Indiana. Crews are working to overcome the weather challenges that are affecting shipping schedules.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Toledo Public Schools held its first community meeting on Tuesday to discuss upcoming changes in the district (more details forthcoming) and additional meetings are planned.  WTOL
  • Toledo Public Schools elected new board leadership and will hold community meetings (held at Woodward, Bowsher, Start, Rogers, Waite, and Scott high schools) in February and March to gather input on plans addressing a near $70 million budget shortfall.  WTVG
  • Sanjana Kumariya, a doctoral student at UToledo, released research yesterday on a protein that may improve coronary artery stents by boosting vascular smooth muscle cell growth and limiting endothelial cell expansion.  The University of Toledo

  • Ramaswamy has chosen Rob McColley (Ohio Senate President from Napoleon) as his running mate for lieutenant governor. The new ticket will begin campaigning statewide soon.  The Blade
  • Toledo drag queen Sugar Vermonte announced Monday he is running for Congress in Ohio's 9th District because he thinks Ohio is ready for a change.  WTOL
  • Residents in Toledo can now place up to five bulky items on the curb each week under new city restrictions. They are advised to check local guidelines & verify which items qualify for pickup.  WTOL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Air samples taken in November and December near the Bunting Bearings site showed high lead levels — prompting officials to test water in Delta and Swanton as a precaution.  WTOL
  • Influenza activity is spiking earlier than usual as the CDC (national health agency) reports near a 30-year high, and Toledo is tracking the trend.  WTVG
