COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A surprise donation of $1M is enabling a local animal rescue organization to continue its work and expand services in Toledo.  The Blade
  • On Dec. 31, Toledo drivers faced crowded roads as they headed to festivities and local law enforcement urged careful driving to prevent mishaps.  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • First Brands Group announced plans to close the Eagle Machining facility in Fayette, which will idle 251 workers and affect local employment. The move is expected to impact the business community.  The Blade
  • On Dec. 31, the Fayette factory announced its closure, which will impact 250+ employees and shift local operations as management prepares for the transition.  WTVG
  • Toledo’s Innovation Post marked its first year when city and county officials cut the ribbon nearly a year ago, and local companies have moved in with room for expansion.  The Blade
  • A WARN notice has been issued for Eagle Machining in Fayette because reduced production will force the factory to close on Feb. 27, leading to layoffs for 248 workers while three remain to complete the shutdown at (705 N Fayette Street).  WTVG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, Ohio raises the minimum wage for non-tipped workers to $11 an hour (a 2.8 percent rise). Some local groups ask if further improvements could better support workers.  The Blade

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UToledo’s Lloyd A. Jacobs Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center earned full research accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in September — marking it as the first academic institution in Ohio with both accreditations in medical simulation. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Elise has struggled to get her apartment's heat fixed since November and found that the City inspects only exteriors (not interiors) when she contacted code enforcement. Other residents in Vistula have also put rent in escrow to press landlords for repairs.  WTVG
  • The Department of Commerce announced that Ohio minimum wage will rise today to $11 for non-tipped and $5.50 for tipped employees at businesses with annual receipts over $405,000, while smaller companies and 14 and 15 year old workers will remain at $7.25 per hour.  WTVG

  • The University of Toledo women's basketball team used a huge second-quarter run to roll past Buffalo 79-46 in its MAC opener & built on strong play to secure the win.  The Blade
